Areas of Ministry -
TALK RADIO
I became hooked on public
debate in college and arguing for truth has been a passion of mine ever since.
By the time I graduated, I knew I wanted to minister in this way.
God started to fulfill this vision almost immediately and, as I shared elsewhere, I spent my years in graduate school hosting a talk radio program in
Portland. Along with co-hosting “Hot
Potato Radio” on KOTK with Bob
Cryder, I also started my own program on KPSU, the Portland State University
radio station.
Since moving from Portland, my job as college / career director at EFCHB
has opened up a different venue for public discussion. I have been able to host
forums with students at the church as well as occasionally get onto campus. Last
year I was part of a forum at Chapman University entitled “Who was Jesus?”
that went great. As neat as radio is, actually being in the room adds a great
dynamic to spiritual discussion.
DJEM focuses on both of these types of public proclamation. In the radio
department, “The Don
Johnson Show” premiered in January, 2005 on Newstalk 590 KTIE.
This is a general market (secular) talk station that will reach the broad
audience I desire. Hopefully as the show gets established, I will be able to
take it to other stations. Salem has said that KRLA—a major LA talk station–
would be another good place for me if KTIE goes well.
As you can imagine, I’m ecstatic to
be back on the air. One clear
benefit will be that it will open other opportunities for the more personal
interaction of open forums. Along with trying to book college campuses and
coffee shops, I will be hosting “Open Forum Friday’” once a month at my
church. This will be a great chance for radio listeners and others to hear and
explore the claims of Jesus.
